What Builds Up on Panels in Cape Town

• Dust. The long dry summer and the south-easter carry dust from roads, building sites and open ground onto panels.
• Bird droppings. Gulls and pigeons are common. Droppings bake on and shade the cells underneath.
• Pollen and leaves. Spring pollen and leaf litter collect along the bottom edge of the panels.
• Coastal salt. Homes near the sea get a salt film that dust sticks to.
• Other residue. Soot, traffic grime and, on panels that are rarely cleaned, lichen.

Winter rain from May to August rinses off loose dust, but not droppings, salt film or dirt caked along the frame edge.

What a Cleaning Visit Usually Includes

1. An access check: roof height, pitch, roof type and where to set up safely.
2. A visual check of the panels, with any cracks, loose fixings or damage reported before cleaning.
3. Rinsing, then washing with soft brushes and pure or deionised water, or a panel-safe cleaner.
4. A final rinse so the glass dries without spots, and before and after photos if you ask.

Confirm in each quote which of these steps are included.

Panel-Safe Cleaning Methods

PV panel cleaning should not scratch the glass or stress the panels. Soft brushes and low-pressure water are the norm. Ask providers to avoid:

• High-pressure washers, abrasive pads and harsh detergents.
• Cold water on hot panels in the middle of the day. Early morning or late afternoon is safer.
• Walking or kneeling on the panels.

Most panel manufacturers publish cleaning instructions, and some methods can affect warranty cover. Ask how the provider follows them.

Once-Off or Recurring Cleaning

A once-off clean suits a first clean or a system that has been left for a long time. Recurring cleaning, usually quarterly or twice a year, suits sites near the coast, busy roads, trees or birds, and panels at a low tilt where dirt does not run off. Some providers give a discount for a recurring schedule.
